Cognitive Science

While this TED talk by Jonathan Levi criticizes pedagogy - it makes me reflect - why don't WE offer a class to introduce this as learning styles?

My WE I refer to my own teaching institution!

Both for the benefit of students, but also for faculty constantly trying to keep up with new research emerging in the field, these tools for harnessing the brain's neural pathways, and making use of its plasticity makes good sense!

The more I learn about learning, the more I confirm I don't know. I do know, however, the ability to measure the growth of Goleman's emotional intelligence continues to be a challenge in our curriculum. Self awareness, managing emotions and recognizing the emotions of others are key in a therapist's training as they grow from self into therapist, donning the ethics and behavioral codes that come with it.

Another favorite I routinely show to students as they hit a low around exam time is another TED talk by Dr. Jill Taylor entitled Stroke of Insight. Merriam & Bierema reference the neuroanatomist's revelations from her own encounter of having a stroke and living through the experience as a brain scientist, and making sense of it afterwards.

Enjoy! I always do.
